How HRA exemption works

If you receive House Rent Allowance and live in rented accommodation, part of your HRA is exempt from income tax under Section 10(13A) — but only in the old tax regime. The exempt amount is the least of three values: your actual HRA, 50% of basic salary (metro) or 40% (non-metro), and rent paid minus 10% of basic salary. Whatever remains of your HRA after the exemption is added to your taxable income.

This calculator uses monthly figures and also shows the annual equivalents. Keep rent receipts, and your landlord's PAN if annual rent exceeds ₹1 lakh, to support your claim.
