Corpus growth over time

How your total contributions and NPS corpus grow year by year until 60 — the gap between the two lines is the power of long-term compounding.

NPS formula

Corpus = P × [((1+i)ⁿ − 1) / i] × (1+i)

P = monthly contribution, i = monthly return (annual ÷ 12 ÷ 100), n = months to age 60. Contributions grow monthly. At 60, monthly pension = annuity corpus × annuity return ÷ 12.

Your numbers

  • P = ₹5,000 / month
  • n = 360 months at 10% p.a. (age 30 → 60)
  • → Corpus at 60 = ₹1,13,96,627
  • 40% annuity at 6% = ₹22,793 / month

How the NPS calculator works

The National Pension System (NPS) is a government-backed, market-linked retirement scheme regulated by the PFRDA. You contribute a fixed amount every month into a mix of equity, corporate bonds and government securities, and the money compounds until you reach the retirement age of 60. This calculator invests each contribution at the start of the month and grows the balance monthly, so contributions you make earlier keep compounding the longest.

At 60 you can withdraw up to 60% of the corpus as a tax-free lump sum, while a minimum of 40% must be used to buy an annuity that pays you a regular monthly pension for life. Move the annuity slider to see how a larger annuity portion trades a smaller lump sum for a bigger pension. Returns on both the corpus and the annuity are estimates, not guarantees — actual NPS and annuity returns vary with the market and the annuity product you choose.
